In general, if you are a man, you have a 1 out of 6 chance of
developing prostate cancer. That is a 16.6% chance of being
diagnosed with prostate cancer, according to studies such as
a 2012 study led by Dr. Kathryn Wilson and Edward
Giovannucci of the Harvard School of Public Health.

At this point, it’s important to say what that number --16.6%
-- means.  This is what is called an “incidence” number and it
is often misunderstood.  Incidence means the number of
people who will be diagnosed in a given size population.

For example, if there is a football stadium with 100 men in it,
16 of them could be expected to be diagnosed with prostate
cancer.

But if the stadium has 1000 men in it, only 1.6 would be
expected to be diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Now, let’s look at some specific types of profiles to assess
your risk:

1.        If Your Father Had Prostate Cancer.

If your father had prostate cancer, you have twice the risk
for being diagnosed with prostate cancer than a man whose
father did not have prostate cancer. Thus, since a man who
did not have a history of prostate cancer has a 16.6% chance
of developing it, you would have a 33.3% chance of being
diagnosed with prostate cancer if your father had prostate
cancer.  In a football stadium of 1000 similar men – all of the
1000 men have fathers with prostate cancer – 33 of these
men could be expected to be diagnosed with prostate cancer.

2.        If Your Brother Had Prostate Cancer.

If your brother had prostate cancer, you have 3 times greater
risk than a man who did not have a brother with prostate
cancer.  This means that you have a 49.8% chance of having
prostate cancer, if your brother has prostate cancer.

So, in a football stadium of men with similar histories, all of
whom had brothers with prostate cancer, 49.8 of them also
would expected to be diagnosed with prostate cancer.

3.        If Both Your Father and Your Brother Had Prostate
Cancer.

If both your father and your brother had prostate cancer,
your risk is 9 times greater than a man without this family
history.  This means that if both your father and your brother
have prostate cancer, then you have a 154% higher chance
of developing prostate cancer than a man without this history.

In a football stadium of 1000 men with similar histories, 154
of them would be expected to be diagnosed with prostate
cancer.

4.        If You Are African American.

Your risk for prostate cancer is 60 times higher than the risk
of an Asian man living in Asia.

5.        If You Are a White American.

If you are a White American man (and you are not Hispanic),
your risk is 20 times higher than an Asian (Chinese or
Japanese) man living in their native countries.

However, for Chinese American or Japanese American men,
their risk is much closer to those of other American men. This
suggests to researchers that lifestyle and perhaps
environment work together to increase your risk for
developing prostate cancer.

What Environmental and Lifetsyle Increase Your Risk for
Prostate Cancer?

Scientists have now had several decades to study incidences
of prostate cancer across populations all over the world. They
now believe that you increase your risk for getting prostate
cancer if:

-you smoke
-you are sedentary
-you eat diets high in saturated fat (meats)
-you eat a diet low in vegetables and fiber

It’s clear what you should do to lower your risk for
developing prostate cancer. You have to boost the amounts
of
foods that can help prevent prostate cancer such as dark
leafy greens, tomatoes and fish with omega-3 fatty acids such
as salmon and sardines. And you have to get moving and
keep moving. Stay active in every decade of your life, in your
teens, twenties, thirties and certainly after you reach your
fifties and beyond.
