If we weren’t so used to our own body odour, we would be
smelling our upper lips all day long. Yup, our noses are right
above them. So, if you do start to smell your upper lip, that’s
a pretty clear sign that something is wrong. You shouldn’t
smell like anything to you. You should smell...neutral.

Usually, the causes of upper lip smell are pretty benign.
Maybe your hormones are imbalanced and your sweat smells
strange. Often during the middle of the menstrual cycle,
women have a different odour. Stress and anxiety can also
affect the amount and how you sweat.

However, you should also look to your diet and daily habits.
Chances are if you are smoking or drinking a lot, you won’t
smell too great. While onions and garlic actually are good for
you and have many health benefits, they may temporarily
make your upper lip and most of your body smell pretty
weird. You may also have a gum infection or excess buildup
of plaque on your teeth. In this case, there are many
different bacteria killers and techniques you can use.

The smell could be due to something serious if you have
plaque on your teeth, swollen lymph nodes, or red, swollen
gums. Definitely see your doctor if you’re feeling not only a
bad smell, but uncomfortable secondary conditions.

Meanwhile, read on to find some natural remedies that are
good for any case of smelly upper lip.

1. Use Natural Oils and Herbs
In addition to just smelling great, many natural herbs can
help to neutralize bad smells and get rid of bacteria. Dr. Axe,
nutritionist from Palmer College and founder of Exodus
Health Center, recommends cloves and tea tree oil on the

To apply, mix them with a carrier such as coconut oil. There
are also other herbs that you can incorporate into your diet
that will keep your lips smelling much nicer, such as
fenugreek seeds, cardamom, fennel, and cinnamon. Anything
with vitamin C also helps.

If you are a follower of homeopathic medicine, ask your
practitioner if any of the following would work for you:
Arnica Montana, Antim Crud, Ars Alb, or borax.

Wash Your Face

Seriously, sometimes the upper lip smelling weird is just a
combination of sweat and bacteria that has been hanging out
there during the course of the day.

It doesn’t really matter whether you use regular or
antibacterial soap, according to a 2016 study by S.A. Kim
from Korea University in Seoul. According to the test results,
the regular and antibacterial soap both had similar success in
eliminating bacteria.

However, here’s food for thought: maybe if what you have is
just regular temporary sweat and only you can sense the bad
odour, don’t worry. The pheromones in the sweat may even
help your love life, if you’re a guy.

A 2003 study by George Preti from the University of
Pennsylvania and Monell Chemical Senses Center in
Philadelphia revealed that exposure to male perspiration
brightened women’s moods, relaxed them, and had an effect
on the luteinizing hormone, which affects the length and
timing of the menstrual cycle. You have to decide how you
feel the most comfortable, but maybe a little sweat on the
upper lip isn’t the worst thing, if you’re the only one noticing
the odour.

Change Your Diet

Whether your smelly upper lip is due to a hormone imbalance,
weird bacteria, or sweat, there are certain foods that can
neutralize and reduce smelliness. Sally Crams, dentist and
Washington-DC based periodontist and spokesperson for the
American Dental Association suggests fresh herbs, such as
parsley, basil, and mint. Ginger is also great for getting rid of

Sugar-free yogurt is great, as well; the pro-biotics neutralize
bad smells. An apple a day may or may not keep the doctor
away, but it does make you smell better, given the numerous
polyphenols present, according to dietician and Brown
University graduate Abbey Sharp.

There are also some foods you should avoid, to improve body
scent, including: onions, garlic, coffee, alcohol, and anything
containing sugar.

Hydrate, Hydrate, and Hydrate Some More

Bacteria loves to thrive in a dry mouth. That’s why when you
wake up, you usually have that “morning breath”, caused by
a lack of hydration. Not drinking water can cause a host of
problems, including smelly lip.

Leah Kaufman, New York based nutritionist at Leah Kaufman
nutrition, affirms that drinking water can flush out toxins and
remove bacteria naturally.

She also recommends you eat certain fruits and vegetables
with a high water content, such as watermelon and
cucumber. So, wash away that food and keep your saliva
production going with regularly drinking water throughout
the day.

Drink Green Tea

What isn’t green tea good for anyway? Now, you can also
use the beverage to get smelling better.

Green tea neutralizes odor in general, and particularly where
sulfur compounds are concerned. Tea polyphenols have been
shown to have both antimicrobial and deodorant effects. In a
2008 study by P. Lodhia at the University of British Columbia,
they found when testing green tea against other substances
to reduce volatile sulfur compounds, that green tea had the
largest impact on reducing them, as well as a strong
deodorant reaction.

So, now you know. If your lip is smelling weird, instead of
slurping that java juice after lunch, pick up a cup of green tea

Add Zinc to Your Diet to Smell Better

Foods rich in zinc are delicious, and also eliminate bad body
odours. Chances are, you already eat some things with zinc,
such as mushrooms, corn, pumpkin seeds, or almonds.

But did you know that zinc also prevents anaerobic bacteria
in your mouth?

In 2007, P.S. Thrane and researchers from the University of
Oslo in Norway found a particularly effective zinc mouthwash
solution. They combined zinc and hexachloride, and the
results were surprising: After testing ten healthy volunteers
(5 male, 5 female with an average age of 46), the test rinse
reduced sulfur levels by 0.75% of the control after three
hours. Zinc is pretty magical.

If you can’t find zinc mouthwash, you can always
incorporate zinc-rich foods in your diet or consider zinc

Use Apple Cider Vinegar

Like green tea, apple cider vinegar is kind of a cure-all miracle
whip. The great thing about this multifaceted liquid, in the
case of a smelly lip, is that the solution is safe to put on your
face or in your mouth.

Apple cider vinegar is a pretty good toner, as well as bacteria
eliminator. A.C. Mota from the dentistry program at João
Pessoa in Paraíba, Brazil, confirmed the use of apple cider
vinegar as a fungicidal element.

In 2007, Mota and researchers performed a microdilution
technique used to determine minimum inhibitory
concentration and minimum fungicidal concentration of apple
cider vinegar, containing 4% malic acid and of myostatin. A
microbial kinetic assay showed a statistical difference
between vinegar and myostatin. Just 30 minutes later, apple
cider vinegar displayed a fungicidal effect, whereas myostatin
did not.

Apple cider vinegar is tough on bacteria, as well as good to
use after you wash your face on that stubborn, smelly upper
lip. Just dilute a little in a bunch of water, and you’re good to
