If you are one of the 240,000 men in America who has just
been told that "you have prostate cancer", take a deep
breath.  One of the first questions you may have is "how
should I change my diet to help fight prostate cancer?" Are
there foods which can improve my chances of surviving
prostate cancer?

The good news is that several studies have identified foods
which greatly improve your chances of surviving with
prostate cancer. We have compiled the following list of foods
that help:
























1.
Fish and Foods with Omega-3 Increase Survival Rates
from Prostate Cancer.
 

If you have prostate cancer, There is no better  food to eat
than fish with omega-3 fatty acids. Fish like salmon, sardines,
halibut and tuna are all high in omega-3 fatty acids. Walnuts
and other nuts are also especially high in omega-3 fatty acids.

Several important studies have proved that omega-3
increases the survival rate of prostate cancer patients. One
2008 mega-study led by Dr. Jorge Navarro of the Harvard
School of Public Health examined the health records of 2,161
men for 22 years after they were diagnosed with prostate
cancer.

What they found was that those men who ate fish at least 5
times a week had a
48% lower death rate than men who ate
fish less than once a week on average.
 That's almost a 50%
lower mortality rate.

Other studies have reached a similar conclusion. For example,
a 2007 study, led by researchers from Wake Forest University
School of Medicine , concluded: "
We found that omega-3
fatty acids reduced prostate tumor growth, slowed
histopathological progression, and increased survival,
whereas omega-6 fatty acids had opposite effects
."

One important caveat. Eating fish did not lower the incidence
of
getting prostate cancer, the Harvard mega-study found.
But, once you have prostate cancer, eating fish can improve
your chances of surviving prostate cancer.


2.
Stop Using Vegetable Oil If You Have Prostate Cancer.

Vegetable oil has been linked with increased rates of death
from prostate cancer. Why?  The answer lies once again in
the way omega-3 works in your body.

Vegetable oil is rich in omega-6 fatty acids. Omega-6 fatty
acids, unlike omega-3 fatty acids, raises your risk for
surviving prostate cancer.

In fact, eating too much omega-6
reverses the positive health
benefits of eating foods like fish which can be high in omega-
3 fatty acids.  Eating foods rich in omega-6 ---vegetable oil
(especially safflower oil), processed foods, crunchy snacks--
actually lowers the amount of useful omega-3 in your body.

The ideal ratio of omega 6 to omega-3 is about 4 to 1.
However, most Americans eat diets with 30 times more
omega-6 than omega 3.

As the amount of omega 6 has increasingly overpowered the
amount of  omega 3 in the diets of men in the US, UK, Canada
and other developed countries, men have developed higher
and higher rates of prostate cancer. Here is what one
important study in 2010 from the Genito-Urinary Cancer
Research Group in Manchester, UK found:

"It is interesting to note that the increases in incidence and
mortality from [prostate cancer] in developing countries over
the last 30 years has coincidentally mirrored the increased
dietary ω-6:ω-3 PUFA ratio brought about by greater
vegetable oil consumption and the use of cereal grain to feed
livestock."


Got it? If you want to decrease your risk for prostate cancer,
dump the vegetable oil.

What type of oil should you use instead of vegetable oil if you
have prostate cancer?  Use extra virgin olive oil. In fact, in
2005 a team of researchers from Columbia University
discovered that a pill made from olive oil and herbs (turmeric,
ginger, rosemary and oregano, green tea extracts an a special
kind of basil found in India) marketed under the name
"Ziflamend" was shown to decrease prostate cancer cell
growth by 78%.

However, if you want to enjoy the health benefits of olive oil,
you should try to have it cold or at best lukewarm.
Heating
olive oil up at too high a temperature destroys all of its health
benefits.]


3.
Eat Walnuts to Shrink Prostate Cancer Tumors.  Keep a
bowl of walnuts around the house if you have prostate
cancer.

Walnuts can reduce the size of prostate tumors by 50%. They
can also make the tumors grow 30% slower. These were the
findings of a 2012 study from researchers at the University of
California-Davis and the U.S. Department of Agriculture
Western Regional Research Center in Albany, California.

How many walnuts should you eat to fight prostate cancer?
The mice in the study ate the equivalent of almost 3 ounces of
walnuts a day.  According to the University of Nebraska, you
need 14 walnut halves to equal 1 ounce, so to get 3 ounces,
you would need to eat 42 walnut halves or 21 walnuts a day.

4.
Red Peppers Make Prostate Cancer Cells Commit Suicide.
Several studies have found that
eating red peppers can cause
cells to enter "apoptosis", early cell suicide.

Vitamin D Helps to Improve Prostate Cancer Survival
Rates
. For years, a unusual fact puzzled scientists studying
prostate cancer. White men with prostate have a much higher
survival rate than Black men with the disease. Why? Now,
researchers think they may know why. The answer lies in
Vitamin D absorption. Vitamin D blood stream levels have
been associated with higher chances of surviving prostate
cancer. We get most of our Vitamin D from teh sun. Because
darker people absorb less Vitamin D for the same amount of
time in the sun --dark colors block sun ray absorption --
darker races of men tend to have lower levels of Vitamin D in
their blood streams, which puts them at a disadvantage when
it comes to survival from all forms of cancer, especially
prostate cancer.

This connection between Vitamin D rates and your chances of
surviving prostate cancer was observed  in a 2012 study
entitled "Differences in vitamin D status may account for
unexplained disparities in cancer survival rates between
African and white Americans".

To ensure that you get the amount of Vitamin D you need, try
getting sun for at least 20 to 30 minutes a day, exposing your
arms and legs if possible. If you live in North America, Canada
or Europe (other than southern France and southern Italy),
chances are that you are Vitamin D deficient. Consider adding
Vitamin D to your diet by taking cod liver oil or a Vitamin D
supplement, especially during the winter months.]
