4. Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne pepper is hot and it can add flavor to just about
any or your meals and specific drinks.

Cayenne contains a compound called  capsaicin, a natural
ingredient found in cayenne peppers having excellent
cardiovascular benefits.

These benefits were outlined in a study conducted by Dr.
M. Yoshioka, at the Laboratory of Biochemistry of Exercise
and Nutrition at the University of Tsukuba, Japan (1995).

The research found that using cayenne pepper in your diet
will increase "carbohydrate oxidation", thus burning carbs
through a thermo-genic process, leading to weight loss
and more energy for your runs and cardio exercises. This
could be beneficial both for athletes who perform at high
cardiovascular levels or who just want to shed a few
minutes off those weekly runs through the neighborhood
or park.

5.        Beetroot

Have you ever had a beet salad in a restaurant or even had
the messy pleasure of peeling cooked beats in your
kitchen?

Well, that time wasn't wasted if you are trying to shed a
few minutes from your run and decrease your blood
pressure as well.

A study conducted by Dr. Margaret Murphy and colleagues,
published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and
Dietetics (2011) concluded that eating beets can improve
endurance through increased levels of nitrate intake.

The study also confirmed that the research subjects who
increased endurance had lower levels of exertion with little
to no change in heart rate. This can be correlated to the
creatine synthesis that improves blood flow and allows the
body to use oxygen more efficiently. The health benefits of
lowering blood pressure is just an added bonus to this
amazing natural performance enhancer that you can buy at
your local grocery store or farmers market on Saturday
morning.

6.        Pumpkins.


























Don't wait for Halloween  or Thanksgiving to eat pumpkins.

Pumpkin was recently shown to have athletic enhancement
capabilities in a study published in Molecules (2012) by Dr.
Wang and colleagues from the Department of Food and
Nutrition at Providence University in Taiwan.

The study concluded that pumpkin extract increased
performance in exercise while decreasing fatigue and post
workout soreness.

The study noted that “the mechanism was relevant to the
increase in energy storage (as glycogen) and release (as
blood glucose), and the decrease of plasma levels of
lactate, ammonia, and creatine kinase.”

Pumpkin can give you that extra pump in the gym to take
your workout to the next level naturally and you may have
some pumpkin left over for making some well-deserved
post workout pie.

7. Kidney Beans

Kidney Beans are one of nature’s highest forms of protein
and can help improve your strength, endurance, and
recovery times in your training.

One cup of kidney beans contains 15 grams of protein
including other vital nutrients for athletic performance
such as magnesium and iron. Magnesium plays a key role
in energy metabolism and iron increases oxygen flow to
your blood.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
recommend that men over the age of 19 get 56 grams of
protein each day. So, a couple of cups of kidney beans
gives you about 60% of what you need each day.

If you watch long distance running races at the Olympics
or the New York or Boston Marathon, you may have
noticed how often Kenyan runners win. Well, part of their
secret for success are kidney beans.

A study conducted by the Centre of African Studies at the
University of Copenhagen (2002) examined the nutrition
intake of Kenyan runners.

The study noted that their diets were “mainly derived from
vegetable sources (90%) with maize and kidney beans as
the staple food (81%).” This high protein and nutrient
rich natural strength and endurance enhancement can help
boost your mental and physical training.

Maybe you won't run as long as a champion Kenyan
endurance runner. But kidney beans or any legume will
undoubtedly boost your exercise potential.

These are a few great natural ways to enhance your
athletic performance without guzzling down protein
shakes and popping packs of pills. It’s important to
understand what supplements may or may not contain the
regulatory amounts of what the body really needs for
proper health and nutrition.

More times than not, you can find the nutrition and fitness

at a reasonable price in the produce aisle. It’s always
