And there is was. Those of us who have watched Tiger Woods crawl
back from the abyss since his tragic divorce in 2011 have all wondered:
"how much did it take out of him?". Doubtless it did take something
from him. Gone was the belief in himself, and gone with it was the
ability to create golf with breathtaking combinations of power and
control. But all that was, as they say, then, and this is now. Now,
Tiger Woods, incredibly, is back. Yesterday, he capped a steady climb
back by capturing the 2012 Arnold Palmer Invitational with a 5-stroke
dominant win at Bay Hill Golf & Lodge in Orlando, Florida.
Maybe more important than the win itself is how he won. He led -- just
barely -- going into the final round. The third round saw him wobble
with a bogey on 13th, followed by a double bogey on 15 caused when
a women screamed at the exact moment of impact of his tee shot, a
misstep that in recent months was just the type of setback that could
cause an entire round to unravel. But not this time. After the double
bogey, Tiger steadied, showing the steel we had grown accustomed to
before the Big Fall, Tiger steadied with a birdey at 17. That saved his
round and secured a razor-thin 1 shot lead going into the final round.
On Sunday, Tiger bounced back from an early bogey with 3 birdies
before the turn to the front nine. Finishing with a 13 under par 275, 5
shots ahead of second-place finisher Graeme McDowell.
He could have shouted. But Tiger instead showed a touch of humility,
saying "It's not a major" but later adding that "It's nice to be able to
But for all of Tiger's humility, a more ominous warning came from one
of his competitors, Hunter Mahan. "I think people have to stop
comparing him to past days," said Hunter Mahan after playing with
Woods during the first two rounds. "People have to look at it from now
and look at him almost as if he's a new golfer. … All the tools are sharp
and getting better than they used to be".
Tiger Woods --better than he used to be. Scary.
