Among the many nightmares that only men have, perhaps
getting penis cancer is the worst. Penis cancer --just the
thought of it is enough to make you shudder. But with this
condition, thankfully, the words of President Franklin
Roosevelt are apt--”there is nothing more to fear than fear
itself”.

It turns out that penis cancer is pretty rare --about 1% of all
cancers that affect men.  For the 5-year period from 1998
and 2003, only 4,967 men got penis cancer in the US,
according to a 2008 study led by Dr. Brenda Hernandez of
the University of Hawaii .

Who Gets Penis Cancer?

Penis cancer, technically known as invasive squamous cell
carcinoma of the penis, is not an equal opportunity disease.
Penis cancer affects white and African-American men at the
same rates. But Hispanic men have a 72% higher risk than
non-Hispanics.

In fact, Diego Rivera, the famous Mexican painter of murals,
and the husband of the equally famous painter Frida Kahlo,
was a notorious womanizer, who developed penis cancer and
died from the disease. Rivera refused to have a penectomy --
which is what is sounds like, amputation of the penis -- and
instead traveled to Russia for radiation treatments. The
treatments didn’t work and he died a painful death.

Asian men and Pacific Islanders have the lowest penis cancer
risk of all, about 30% less than whites or Blacks. What are
the signs of penis cancer? What are the remedies?

Signs of Penis Cancer

All cancers eventually manifest themselves by growing large
enough to become clumps of cells rather than individual,
microscopic cells. When the clumps of cells become large
enough, you may see them or feel them as an abnormal
lump.  With penis (often called “penile) cancer, you may see
lumps at the end of your penis when you retract the foreskin,
according to the American Cancer Society. You may also feel
lumps near your groin where it attaches to the penis, if the
penis has spread to the lymph nodes in the groin. The
American Cancer Society lists these other symptoms of penis
cancer:

An area of skin becoming thicker and/or changing color

-A lump on the penis

-An ulcer (sore) that might bleed

-A reddish, velvety rash

-Small, crusty bumps

-Flat, bluish-brown growths

-Smelly discharge (fluid) under the foreskin

In addition to these symptoms, The National Health Service of
the UK adds  4 other symptoms to watch out for:

-A growth or sore on the penis that doesn’t heal within 4
weeks - it can look like a wart, ulcer or blister and is not
always painful

-Bleeding from the penis or from under the foreskin

-Difficulty in drawing back the foreskin (phimosis)

-A change in the colour of the penis or foreskin

If the cancer has spread, you may feel lumps in your groin,
feel tired, and lose weight. feel pain in your bones or in your
abdomen.

But we’re not going to let it get that far, are we?

Tips to Prevent Penis Cancer

1. Circumcision. Circumcision is a powerful ally against penis
cancer. In fact, the invasive form of penic cancer almost
always only affects uncircumcised men, according to a 2011
study led by Dr. Brian Morris of the University of Sydney and
Dr. Ronald Gray of Johns Hopkins University.

The lifetime risk for getting penis cancer is 1 out of 400 for
uncircumcised men in the US, the study observed. That may
not be too comforting. If your high school graduating class is
400 uncircumcised men, then one of you will get penis
cancer. If your high school class is 800, and all of you are
uncircumcised, then 2 of you will draw the bad straw.

In Israel, where almost all men are circumcised, the rate of
penis cancer is the lowest in the world, only 1 out of 1 million
men get the disease.

For circumcised men, the risk in almost too small to calculate.
The study estimates that men who are circumcised face only a
1 out of 50,000 risk for penis cancer.  Doctors believe that
circumcision cuts down on the risk for infection by the human
papilloma virus, a risk factor for penis cancer in men and
cervical cancer in women.

2.
Keep it Clean, Super-clean. In Denmark, where only 3% of
men are circumcised, they have lower rates of penis cancer
than the US. The incidence of penis cancer in Denmark is 1
out of 900, as opposed to 1 out of 400 in the US.  Scientists
don’t know what protects the Danish men more than
American men but some theorize that the emphasis of
cleanliness may account for the difference. (Read more about
how to keep your penis clean.)

3.
Treat Phimosis. Phimosis is the technical name for tight
foreskin.  Having phimosis is correlated with penis cancer,
according to a 2010 study from Department of Urology,
Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplasicas. Here is a list
of
remedies for phimosis.

4.
Stop Smoking. Enough said, right? Smoking is a significant
risk for penis cancer, numerous studies have found.

5.
Treat Balanitis. Balanitis is an inflammation of the head of
the penis or foreskin. In addition to being a risk factor for
penis cancer, balanatis can also be a symptom of penis
cancer. Eating sugar increases your risk for this condition, so
aim to lower the amount of sugar you add to your diet. Treat
bread as a desert and fill your plate with vegetables, with
meat as a side dish.  Here is a list of remedies to prevent
balanitis.

6.
Avoid Genital Warts. Genital warts are most often caused
by sexually transmitted diseases. Wearing a condom lowers
your risk for many such diseases.

7.
Keep On Moving. Being sedentary is not a good idea in
general for your health but it's particularly bad in terms of
penis cancer risk. Physical inactivity puts you at greater risk
for penis cancer, many studies have found, including a 2001
study from Fooyin Institute of Technology, Daliao,
Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

Aim to be active in some way every day. Walk every day and
crank up the intensity high enough to work up a sweat 3 to 4
times a week.
