On April 18,2011, the White House released the Obamas 2010 tax returns, showing that the First Couple earned a combined $1,795,314 in 2010. Not bad. And, judged in any context but a room filled with the uber-rich, the Obamas are a very wealthy couple. But their 2010 income is substantially less than the Obamas made in 2009, when they reported a joint income of $5,505,409. Year over year, the Obama's income has declined 67%. Quite a drop. Based on the new release, we have updated our running tally of Barack Obama's net worth, at $10,111, 249. Here are our calculations. The starting point for our calculations is the Obama Net Worth analysis, in which we calculate his net worth based on tax returns released by the campaign and the Administration . Based on those documents, we calculated his 2008 net worth at 8,685,781. That figure included $1.4 million in Nobel Prize money. That net worth figure improved to $10,111,249 once we included his $5 million haul from 2009. Where are the sources of Obama's money? His salary as President is $400,000--he actually reported $395, 188. He also made $1,382,889 in Schedule C business income from the sale of his books. And it this steep decline in book sales that explains the 67% decline in President Obama's total annual income. President Obama enjoys more popularity as an author abroad than he does here in the US. In fact, of the $1,382,889 in book sales (net of commission to his publishers), Obama's books sold $820,751 in foreign countries and only $562,138 here in the US. This year, we're estimating that his net worth will increase only slightly to $11,057,249. Why? Of the $1, 795, 314 that Obama made in 2010, he paid total taxes of $453,770. That leaves $1,341,544 in disposable income. Now, $1.3 million is a lot of money for most of us. But when you're a high-profile couple, it doesn't go as far as you think. The Obamas paid $49,945 in mortgage interest, presumably on their Chicago home pictured at the right. They also gave away $245,075 away to various charities. The 13.6% the Obamas gave away to charity is about average for people in their income bracket. President Obama's favorite charity again this year is Fisher House Foundation. He gave them $150,000. The prior year he gave them $250,000 of his own money. Fisher House is headed by Kenneth Fisher, the billionaire investor and CEO of Fisher Investments a money management firm based in Woodside, California. Fisher, one of the 400 richest Americans, is listed as having a net worth of $1.6 billion by Forbes. After subtracting the charitable deductions, taxes, and mortgage expenses and subtracting what we estimate are $150,000 in additional personal expenses such as school tuition for their adorable daughters (see calculations on prior year's net worth here), we estimate that the Obama's could save approximately $946,000 from their 2010 income. Thus, we add this amount to their net worth, bringing their total current net worth to $11,057,249.
