What causes morning erections --- often called "morning
wood"?  Researchers began looking into what causes
morning erections-- technically called nocturnal penile
tumescence (NPT)-- as a result of studies on erectile
dysfunction. To eliminate physical causes of ED as a
possibility, doctors first ask whether a man is capable of
having an erection in the morning.


It turns out that erections are naturally produced during
the night as we sleep. We get morning wood not only in
the morning but about 3-5 times during the night as well.  
Each erection lasts between 20 and 35 minutes.

Some researchers believe that nigh-time erections and
morning wood is a way for the body to check to see if your
circulatory system is in good working order.

Others believe that the erections occur naturally as men
sleep and fall into REM (rapid eye movement) sleep.

































Less Morning Wood As You Get Older

As most men get older, unless we are on a program to
enhance erectile strength, we gradually have fewer and
softer morning erections. We do not stop getting morning
erections altogether but they change. We get them less
frequently. And they do not last as long or get as hard.


Getting enough sleep --both the amount of hours and the
quality-- affects your morning erections and your erections
in general. So, hit the snooze and keep your wood strong.
