Why the Rich Get Richer Ten Signs You Are About To Be Fired Barack Obama's Net Worth Hubris Syndrome-Psychologists Discover New Personality Disorder Affecting Political Leaders October 11, 2011 By the Editors, Mangoboss With growing crowd of people joining in Occupy Wall Street -type protests around the world, we though it timely to ask -- just how many millionaires are there in America? The answer depends on whom you ask. The Wall Street Journal quotes the non-partisan Tax Policy Center in reporting the number of millionaires at 534,000. But that's far too low, according to a joint survey by Merrill Lynch and CapGemini, that puts the total number of households with investable wealth over $1 million , not counting their primary homes, at 3.1 million Americans. That's down a bit from the 2.86 million these same survey producers found in 2009. That's peanuts, according to a new report by the Deloitte Center for Financial Services. It puts the number of US households with assets over $1 million at 10.5 million households. Why so much discrepancy? Well, the reports are counting different things. The Deloitte reports counts assets, while the CapGemini Merrill Lynch report counts liquid cash and securities. The IRS, on the other hand, counts income. According to the IRS, in 2009 (the last year for which data is available), there were over 235,000 taxpayers who earned at least $1 million. And 8,274 people made more than $10 million. These lucky few are out of a total of 140 million of us who are taxpayers. But even these well-healed lucky few may feel like poor cousins when compared to the super-rich --- those worth at least $30 million. According to Wealth-X, a research firm specializing in studies of the wealthy, more of the super-rich live in New York than any other place in America. This firm reports that 7,720 of the super-rich live in New York metropolitan area, followed by Los Angeles with 4,350 and Chicago with 2,550.
