Do any foods or herbs help to boost testosterone? What Are Normal Testosterone Levels in Men? Normal testosterone levels are difficult to estimate. Testosterone levels vary normally throughout life. However, some studies have arrived at rough guidelines for what you should consider normal testosterone levels. A 2005 from New England Research Institutes looked at testosterone levels in men from aged 40 through 79. Here is what they found are normal testosterone levels for men. Age Normal Testosterone Level 40 to 49 251 to 914 ng/dl 50 to 59 216 to 876 ng/dl 60 to 69 196 to 859 ng/dl 70 to 79 156 to 818 ng/dl Causes of Low Testosterone Your levels of testosterone decrease by about 1% a year after you reach age 30. By the time you reach age 40, you have 10% less testosterone than you did at age 30. By the time you reach age 50, you have 20% less testosterone than you did at age 30, and so on. But if your levels fluctuate below normal, many sorts of health problems can occur. Low sex drive and erectile dysfunction are common and can even lead to depression. While aging is something that you cannot avoid, there are some things that you can do to maintain a normal testosterone level. Keeping slim and sleeping well is a good start, while a good amount of exercise will help. Moreover, there’s something you can try without any big change to your life style -- change your diet to include certain foods and herbs to increase testosterone. Here are 10 such foods and herbs that can boost your testosterone levels naturally: 1. Zinc Increases Your Testosterone Levels This mineral will increase your testosterone production according to a study in the 1981 journal Systems Biology in Reproductive Medicine. Zinc may even affect the size of your testicles, according to a 1985 study by Dr. Ananda Prasad published in the Clinics in Endocrinology and Metabolism. As Dr. Prasad noted, zinc deficiency adversely affects testicular growth: "Testicular functions are affected adversely as a result of zinc deficiency in both humans and experimental animals. This effect of zinc is at the end organ level and the hypothalamic-pituitary axis is intact in zinc-deficient subjects. Inasmuch as zinc is intimately involved in a cell division, its deficiency may adversely affect testicular size and thus its function." Zinc is available in many supplements, but there’s no reason to use them as there are lots of delicious foods that contain it. Beef, pork, lamb, chicken and turkey are a few foods high in zinc to sink your teeth into. If you’re a vegetarian try dairy products or brown rice instead. 2. Skip the Atkins Fad Dieting fads are typically considered unmanly and here’s another reason why: they can lower your sex hormone levels. A widely cited Penn State study of 12 healthy men found that low-carbohydrate and high protein diets can eventually slow down testosterone production. 3. Raw Oysters They may not look like the most erotic thing in the world, but raw oysters could boost not only your testosterone levels but also your libido! Since the Roman Empire, people have believed in the sexual powers of oysters. this since the Roman Empire and finally modern science has proved it with a team at Miami’s Barry University discovering compounds that prompt the release of sex hormones. 4. Cruciferous Vegetables It’s not surprise that vegetables are good for you, but did you know that they can help keep your testosterone levels up? They’re healthy and cheap so try to hit your 5-a-day vegetable target --- broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage are favorites. The indole-3-carbinol (IC3) in these vegetables raises your testosterone and reduces estrogen according to a study of the Rockefeller University Hospital in New York. 5. Fatty Acids Not all fats are bad for you and, according to a study in the Journal of Applied Physiology, Essential Fatty Acids found in food sources such as walnuts, sunflower seeds, fish and shellfish keep your body healthy and promote testosterone production in the body. 6. Avoid Soy Accord to a study at Gifu University of Japan in 2000, soy products can reduce testosterone levels. While diets based on soy are often lower in fat, it’s best to avoid these foods if you’re worried about your hormone levels. 7. Eat Plenty of Nuts to Boost Testosterone We’ve all heard of good fats and bad fats, but did you know the good ones can help raise your hormone level? Research from the International Journal of Sports Medicine tells us that testosterone increases due to the mono unsaturated fat that is abundant in nuts. They’re also a great source of protein for that new workout so get crunching! 8. Sun Flower Seeds They’re not just for rabbits! Being packed with vitamin E means that sun flower seeds help bump up your testosterone levels according to Journal of Plant Foods for Human Nutrition. 9. Allicin in Garlic and Onions These two roots vegetables might not make you the nicest tasting kisser in the world, but they do contain allicin – a compound that is strongly believed to increasing testosterone. As if that wasn’t enough, a 2009 study by St. Thomas Hospital in the United Kingdom showed that high garlic consumption would lower cholesterol in such a way that will combat blood flow problems and reduce male impotence! 10. Drinking Alcohol Tanks Testosterone As fun as it may be, your drinking habit raises the level of stress hormone cortisol and reduces testosterone. This has been known for a while and documented in many studied such as the January 1984 journal Alcohol. It is also believed to reduce estrogen so count your drinks! Update: 11. Avoid Licorice If You Want Normal Testosterone Licorice depresses your testosterone levels. Here is a case reported by doctors at Medizinische Hochschule Hannover in Germany in 2010. A 57-year old man with erectile dysfunction reported to hospital for high blood pressure and other health problems. After taking his medical history, doctors noted that the man routinely ate 300 to 500g of licorice a day. After the man stopped eating licorice, doctors noted that "Four weeks following advice to stop licorice... Testosterone level had significantly increased to be within normal range". So, if you want to increase your testosterone levels, skip the licorice candy.
