Good Night's Sleep Helps You Lose Weight

June 10, 2014

By S. Callahan, Contributing Columnist

By now, you undoubtedly know the statistics by heart. Over 33% of us
are obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control, and 66% of us
are overweight.  We are joined in this jolly condition by an increasing
number of countries around the world ---United Kingdom (65%
overweight, 30% obese), Mexico (overweight, obese),

We have long known that being obese increases our risks for
developing chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and
arthritis. Carrying fat around your middle even pouts you at great risk
for
erectile dysfunction.

But less well known is that carrying extra fat around your abdomen is
far more of an medical emergency than even being overweight or
obese.

A study from a consortium of scientists in 2015 sent shock waves
through the medical industry when it reported that carrying extra fat
around your middle puts you at twice the risk of dying than being fat
generally. The study was conducted by Dr. Karen Sahakyan of the Mayo
Clinic in Minnesota and a team of doctors from around the world
including St. Anne's University Hospital Brno, Brno, Czech Republic and
the  University of Ottawa Heart Institute, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

We live in a world in which we literally are drowning in information
each day. But this study cut through and caught the attention of people
for longer than just a single news cycle. One of the reasons the study
cut through the info-fog is that it was so large. The team looked at the
health records of 15, 184 adults ranging in age from 18 to 90 years.
The group was almost evenly divided between men and women
(52.3% women).

The scientists learned that if a you are a man of a normal weight ( body
mass index of 22 kg/m2) but you also obese around your middle, then
you have up to  2.29 times higher risk of dying from any cause
compared to a man who is obese all over his body.

This research is not a recommendation to "get fat all over" if you're
now carrying a beer gut.  But, the study's findings highlight a paradox
that scientists have known for awhile -- the way that your weight is
connected to disease is far more complex and nuanced that most
people imagine.

For example, another study looked at the relationship between being
diabetic and overweight  (BMI over 25)and your risk for dying. In this
study in  2015, scientists from the National Health Service in the U.K.
(led by Dr. Pierluigi Costanzo) published an examination of the health
records of 10,568 people for over 10 years. Most of the participants
were men and the average age was 63 years old.

Bear in mind that many other studies have firmly establish a link
between being overweight and dying early from heart disease, diabetes
or cancer.

But this study turned those results on their head. The scientists
discovered that those who are overweight and diabetic have a lower
risk of dying than diabetics who are normal weight. The scientists aptly
called this finding a "paradox".

So, the relationship between your body weight and disease is not as
straightforward as some would have you believe.

What we know now is that staying as close to your normal body weight
is best for preventing disease. And, if you are normal body weight, you
have to avoid developing a beer gut at all costs because this may spike
your risk of dying even more than being obese.

But, and here's the weird kicker, if you already have diabetes, being a
bit overweight may not be so bad.

As for those of you who do not have diabetes and have a bit of a beer
gut, here are some strategies for trimming that gut down to size:

1.
Stand Up a Whole Lot More

Standing for more than 2.5 hours a day has been linked with success at
maintaining a normal body weight. In 2008, scientists from the
University of Missouri found that sitting stops your body's production
of an enzyme called "lypase" which helps you body to burn fat. When
you stand, your pancreas re-starts the enzyme's production.

A study commissioned by the BBC from the University of Chester found
that standing 3 or 4 hours a day burns about 30,000 calories per year
--equal to 8.5 pounds of weight loss. To lose an equivalent amount
running, you would have to  run 10 marathons, the study's spokesman,
Dr. John Buckley, estimates.

More and more health authorities are hopping on the bandwagon
advising us to stand more. Stanford's Health Improvement Program
even advises you to use a minute timer that rings every 30 minutes to
remind you to get up.

Both Winston Churchill and Ernest Hemingway used standing desks.
Need I say more?

2.
Eat Foods with Omega-3 Fatty Acids to Trim Your Beer Gut

Foods rich omega-3 fatty acids, and poor in omega-6 fatty acids,
differentially trim your waist line, studies have found.

Add salmon, sardines, halibut and tuna to your diet at least 3 times per
week.  Walnuts also are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and have been
strongly linked with weight loss.

One 2016 study from the University of California at San Diego led by
Dr. Cheryl Rock found that people who eat walnuts lose just as much
weight as people who follow a low-fat diet.  Those whose diets are rich
in walnuts and those who follow a low fat diet lost 8% of their body
weight in 6 months.

3.
Eat More Apples, Berries and Pears. A 2015 study from Harvard T.
H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston has found that, over time,
people who eat more servings of apples, berries and pears or
non-starchy vegetables such as cauliflower or soybeans, lose weight.
But be patient. The average weight loss for every additional daily
serving of these fruits is 1/2 pound per year.
