5 Common Beliefs About Penis Size -True or False?

June 26, 2017

By Susan Callahan, Contributing Columnist

Americans drink 3.5 cups of coffee per day and each cup is
large, about 9 ounces, according to the Harvard School of
Public Health. That's almost as much as the 3.9 cups of
water we drink daily, according to the U.S. Department of
Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service.

Given the amount of coffee that we down, it's perhaps
natural for men to wonder if that much coffee somehow
negatively affects erectile performance. After all, coffee is a
stimulant which can raise blood pressure and, as we know,
men with hypertension are at higher risk for erectile
dysfunction. So, does coffee cause erectile dysfunction?

Actually, Drinking Coffee Lowers Your Risk for ED

New research has found that drinking coffee actually
appears to protect men from developing erectile
dysfunction.

Coffee can lower your risk for erectile dysfunction by
42%, according to a 2015 study from the University of
Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

The study found that men who drink between 85 and 170
milligrams of caffeine per day  are 42% less likely to have
erectile dysfunction. This is compared to me who drink no
coffee or up to 7 milligrams of caffeine daily.

There are about 95 milligrams of caffeine in a cup of
coffee, according to the Us Department of Agriculture, so
the study's findings mean that men who drink one or two
cups of coffee a day can lower their risk for erectile
dysfunction.

But More Is Not Necessarily Better

Interestingly, drinking even more caffeine does not afford
you more protection from ED. Men who drink between 171
and 303 milligrams of caffeine per day lower their risk for
ED by 39%, still impressive but not as much as men who
drink 2 cups or less, the scientists found.

Caffeine apparently causes a relaxation of the helicine
blood vessels supplying the penis and the smooth muscle
lining cavernosal spaces of the penis.  Coffee's beneficial
effects on penile arteries is the latest positive news about
this ubiquitous beverage. Previous studies from around
the world have shown, for example, that
coffee drinking
lowers your risk for cancer.

Does Drinking Coffee Lower ED Risk Even in Obese Men?

Consuming caffeine lowers the risk even after taking into
account factors such as obesity and hypertension.

Do All Caffeinated Beverages Lower Your Risk for ED?

This study covered the consumption of caffeine.  Drinking
coffee, which has few other ingredients other than
caffeine and cocoa phenols, would therefore make sense
to include in your diet if you aim to lower your erectile
dysfunction.

But you should not assume that all caffeinated beverages
will produce the same protections. Studies on the effects
of drinking Coca-Cola on fertility have found that those
who drink large amounts of soda have far lower fertility
rates and sperm health.

No study has directly linked drinking Coca-Cola or other
sodas to higher rates of erectile dysfunction. However, one
study from Nicolaus Copernicus University in Bydgoszcz,
Poland found an indirect link.

That study examined the relationship between the effects
of drinking sugary sodas, metabolic syndrome and erectile
dysfunction. What the scientists found was that men who
drink sodas high in sugar are more likely to develop
obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and other disorders
grouped together as metabolic syndrome, and that having
metabolic syndrome raises your risk for ED.

In fact, 96.5% of men with metabolic syndrome have
erectile dysfunction. Drinking as little as one sugary soft
drink per day can raise your risk for metabolic syndrome
by 48%.

The key harmful factor in the study appears to be the
sugar. Left unexamined was the direct effect of caffeine on
erectile dysfunction.
