Twenty-five year old Brit Andy Murray has made history, capturing the
2012 US Open in a thrilling 5 set marathon battle with Novak Djokovic.
The final score, 7-6 (12-10), 7-5, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2 belied the drama of the
This was a victory won by Murray rather than lost by Djokovic. Time
after time, Murray did something he had failed to do in the previous
years of his still brief career --- he imposed his will over a stubborn
champion. After losing the first two sets --and the first one only
narrowly --- Djokovic rallied to win the next two sets convincingly. The
match at that point acquired a sense of inevitably for Djokovic. You
could almost read Murray's dread on his face as he took the court for
the final set. Was this to be a repeat of so many Grand Slam finals in
which he would walk away the runner-up yet again?
There's a saying in tennis, that's attributed to Boris Becker "the fifth
set is not about tennis, it's about nerves". Ans so it was last night at
US Open. Only this time, it was not Andy Murray whose nerves failed
him. This time, the one who couldn't hold his nerve was Novak Djokovic.
Murray's performance was all the more remarkable after he revealed
that the pounding his feet endured was so brutal that one of his
toenails actually fell off.
What has changed about Murray this year?
The difference in Murray's performance is his coach, former Grand Slam
Champion Ivan Lendl, according to Murray's grandparents, Ellen and
Gordon Murray of Kilsyth, Stirlingshire.
Since Lendl took over Murray's preparations, Murray has won gold at
the Olympics, made it to the finals of Wimbledon where he lost to Roger
Federer, and now, captured his first Grand Slam at the US Open.
Cupping the trophy like a baby and kissing it tenderly, Murray became
the first British man in 76 years --since Fred Perry --to win a Grand
Slam title. How sweet are the returns of patience.
